MARYBOROUGH’S Matthew Dellavedova has made national headlines in the United States after hitting a buzzer beater to win the game for his college basketball side St Mary’s yesterday.
Dellavedova’s three-point bomb from well outside the three-point arc, which gave the Gaels a 70-69 win over Brigham Young University, was judged the number one play of the day on ESPN’s Sportscenter.
The Gaels trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half of the West Coast Conference clash.
BYU led by two with less than a minute to go, but a running jump shot from Dellavedova tied the scores with 35 seconds remaining.
A clutch two-point basket from BYU star Tyler Hawes looked to have given the home side victory.
With 2.5 seconds on the clock, the Gaels inbound the ball to Dellavedova who raced over halfway and launched his running three-point shot.
As the final buzzer sounded, Dellavedova’s shot found nothing but the bottom of the net and the Gaels celebrated an amazing victory.
Dellavedova finished with 18 points and eight assists
