Inspector Brad Dixon has come from the Horsham station.
He said he had spent the first few days of his new job busily getting to know his new patch.
Getting up to speed should be easy for the father of two, as he has made Bendigo his home base for the past 20 years.
Inspector Dixon moved to the area in 1996 when he was posted to Tarnagulla.
His family has remained in Bendigo since, while he has travelled to Ballarat, Shepparton, Wangaratta and Horsham for police duties.
Inspector Dixon said in coming weeks he would see through “significant changes” in the way police operations in Bendigo were managed.
“Up until February 1, I will oversee all of our operations across uniform, CI (Criminal Investigation) and highway patrol,” he said.
“After that CI and highway patrol will be going under a different inspector and I will be looking at our uniform response.”
Inspector Dixon said the changes would free him to focus on community engagement, as well as issues like licencing and emergency management.
“It gives me the opportunity to work with the community more and tackle things like public safety,” he said.
