WITH summer well and truly upon us, a Bendigo wildlife group is urging people to spare a thought for native animals during these hot periods.
President of Wildlife Rescue Emergency Service in Bendigo Neil Morgan said the service had rescued 28 wallabies, 11 kangaroos and nine possums over the past two weeks.
He said putting out a bowl of water for the animals was helpful, but to make sure it was kept away from pets.
Mr Morgan said animals suffering from heat stroke showed certain symptoms, including seeing animals that are usually in trees on the ground, seeing animals that are nocturnal out druing the day and animals losing their balance.
He stressed it was important not to approach an animal suffering from heat stroke but to call the wildlife emergency number immediately.
People can contact the wildlife rescue emergency service on 0427 301 401.
The Australian Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife is running a program on how to make backyards wildlife friendly.
