Taxi driver to apply for bail

A former Bendigo taxi driver accused of sexually assaulting three women is set to apply for bail again next month.

Robert McNeil Byrnes, 44, is charged with a series of sex offences including four counts of rape.

Police allege the offences were committed in March, April and October last year, and say two of the alleged victims were passengers in Byrnes’ taxi.

Byrnes applied for bail in the Bendigo Magistrates Court last month but it was not granted because Magistrate Jennifer Tregent deemed his accommodation inappropriate.

Byrnes had proposed to live at a caravan park outside of Bendigo.

Ms Tregent said she would have granted bail if more appropriate accommodation was found.

Byrnes will face a further committal mention in the same court on February 6.
