Fire safety starts with proper disposal of butts

Smokers, do not throw cigarette butts out of vehicles, even if you believe they are extinguished.

As a member of Harcourt Country Fire Authority, I attended a fire at the intersection of Midland Highway and the entrance to Calder freeway, heading toward Bendigo last Saturday, January 5, 2013.

There were two call-outs that day, to almost the same spot.

Midland Highway seems to be a dumping ground for butts.  Every week I put my rubbish out, there they are again.

Be responsible.

Dispose of butts in a proper disposal bin.

We do not want another Bendigo, Redesdale or Tasmania.
