A CFA media spokeswoman has confirmed smoke in Bendigo is the result of a grass fire at Chepstowe, near Ballarat.
At 8.15pm the fire was still going and had burned 1030 ha with 60 fire appliances in attendance.
The smoke was so thick over Bendigo that the city could not be seen from the One Tree Hill lookout.
Tania Harte from Bendigo visited the lookout with her children in a bid to determine the cause of the smoke.
"We've just come up here for a sticky beak," she said.
"I didn't even know it was going on until I went outside to pick the kids up from the pool.
"The smoke's just everywhere.
SMOKE has engulfed Bendigo and other parts of central Victoria, but the Country Fire Authority hasn't pinpointed the source, a spokesman said.
The CFA was trying to identify where the smoke was coming from at 7pm on Tuesday.
Bendigo Advertiser reporter Hannah Knight said Bendigo could not be seen from usual lookout One Tree Hill, such was the impact of the smoke.
