The 34-year-old Gisborne man was stopped by police when a member of the highway patrol saw his car swerving across lanes of traffic in Durstons Road just before 10am.
The man – who was driving with a suspended licence – tested positive to methamphetamine. His car was impounded and he was charged with driving under the influence of drugs.
Acting Sergeant Peter Dyer said members of the public had phoned police reporting that the man had been driving erratically.
He said the incident was one of only a few on an otherwise quiet day.
