The Hobbit, released yesterday, proved to be the most popular, with about 1500 people viewing the film during the first four sessions.
Bendigo Cinemas manager Donna Wallace said her staff had been flat out on their “busiest day of the year”.
“Lots of adults and kids have come through the doors,” she said.
“It is a public holiday and people also come to redeem cinema vouchers they got for Christmas.”
Ms Wallace said extra staff had been rostered on to contend with the rush of people.
By 3pm yesterday the highly anticipated Les Miserables had produced two sold-out sessions, and Ms Wallace said moviegoers were raving about the film.
“Lots of people have come out of Les Miserables and said it is brilliant,” she said.
Other popular movies include Wreck-it Ralph, an animated children’s film that can be viewed in 3D and Parental Guidance, a comedy starring Billy Crystal.
