The group also handed in a petition with more than a thousand signatures, urging the council to stop the pool from closing down.

The group requested an engineer’s report, costing documents and a second opinion from an independent professional engineer. The council agreed to put the decommissioning of the pool on hold and to provide answers to the group’s questions.

The council also agreed to meet with the group to discuss options for opening the pool next summer.

Save the Golden Square Swimming Pool group member Ken Hamilton said the group was continuing its campaign by putting blue banners up around the suburb.

Mr Hamilton said they were receiving a lot of support in their crusade to save the pool.

“We’ve decided to turn Golden Square blue,” he said. 

“We are making ribbons as well as the banners to put on people’s houses and we are getting lots of support.”

Mr Hamilton said the group expected a written response from the council sometime between the next two council meetings. 

They planned to continue collecting signatures.

Mr Hamilton said the mood of the group remained buoyant.

“We are pleased because the motion passed unanimously,” he said. “We remain very hopeful we can get it open next summer.”

Questions the group has put to council:

1. We request to have a copy of the engineer’s report and any associated costing. 

2. We request that council obtain a second opinion from an independent professional engineer. 

3. To allay public perception about rumours that council was/is communicating with other sporting clubs over the closure of the pool. 

4. We request the council quantify the range of ‘Significant Investment’ for 10-25 years.
