Dig deep to help Luke reach his magic target

WHAT an incredible year Luke Owens has enjoyed.

Few gestures in our community in 2012 will rival that of Luke, who decided to defer university studies to spend his year raising $100,000 to help eliminate youth homelessness.

The Bendigo For Homeless Youth campaign has raised $70,000 and needs $30,000 more in the next 10 days to reach its magical $100,000 target.

Yes, it’s a tough time to ask for donations with many people having already dug deep in trying times to meet Christmas charity requests.

But Bendigo thrives on a challenge and Luke deserves his target for putting his community first this year.

Students, bowlers and Rotary clubs are all pitching in to help this weekend.

The Bendigo Advertiser has offered up a full-page colour advertisement in a silent auction to help raise some of that $30,000 needed. 

The page is worth more than $4000 and we’re hoping to frighten the life out of that figure for such a good cause.

Addy general manager Margot Falconer has guaranteed a Saturday edition should the winning bid be more than $1000 and Bendigo Community Telco has already taken the silent auction to that point.

We trust such goodwill will continue.

While Luke has been the face and engine room of this campaign, he’s had plenty of help along the way from friends, business and strangers alike, and we should not forget to acknowledge and thank all those people for their wonderful kindness as well.

Well done Luke, well done everyone – it’s one of the feel-good stories of the year.  

    Let’s hope 2013 brings a few more.
