With Stapleton committing to the club, the Gold have 18 of the 36 players they need signed for the 2013 season.
Stapleton joins the Gold buoyed by the opportunities presented by the stand-alone club.
The versatile Stapleton has senior VFL experience with Sandringham, although, his opportunities were limited, playing two games last season and four in 2011.
He was runner-up in Sandringham’s reserves best and fairest award last season.
“He has been a little bit starved of opportunity at Sandringham with the St Kilda boys squeezing him out of the senior team,” Gold coach Aussie Jones said yesterday.
“He was looking for regular senior opportunities, which we can give him.
“He’s a hard-running, fit player, who will slot into our midfield rotations, but can also play half-back or half-forward.
“He’s a versatile-type who is super professional and very keen and motivated.”
The signing of Stapleton comes on the back of the Gold earlier this week securing Alik Magin from the Gold Coast Suns.
On board with Gold for 2013:
Steven Stroobants, Lee Coghlan, Tom Cain, Alik Magin, Nathan Beck, Harrison Huntley, Matthew Farrelly, Jake Aarts, Billy McInnes, Matthew Stapleton, Riley McIvor, Galen Munari, Tom Hames, Rhys Clark, Nathan McCarty, Daniel Toman, James Brooker and Lachlan Crosbie.
