City of Greater Bendigo officers have recommended the public be given the chance to name the new 1000-seat theatre complex.
Councillors will be asked to vote on the recommendation at tonight’s council meeting.
They will also be asked to consider plans for a public open day at the former Bendigo Gaol in March 2013, and to sign off on a Joint Use Agreement between the council, the Victorian Minister for Education and the Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC).
In a report to be tabled tonight, City Futures Director Stan Liacos said an open day would give people a unique opportunity to see the gaol before redevelopment works begin in April next year.
Mr Liacos said the theatre would be a major community asset so it was fitting that the public be given the opportunity to name it.
If adopted, the public will be asked to submit their ideas, which will then be considered by the council and the BSSC School Council with a recommendation expected in mid-2013.
Construction on the theatre project is expected to begin in early 2013 for completion in 2014.
