As the name suggests, the prestigious annual event is played on “greens” of sand, where players scrape a line to the hole before putting.
The two-day, 36-hole event is expected to attract 150 players from across Victoria and interstate to vie for trophies in the three divisions.
“We do get people from interstate come and play in it because it’s a pretty prestigious event,” Quarry Hill secretary Trevor Cox said. “For us to get that, it’s a real good achievement.”
The event is open to any golfer with an Australian handicap and regularly attracts high-quality players.
Axedale golf professional Kris Mueck won the event in 2009 at Dimboola.
“You get a few Melbourne players coming up, a lot of people like to try their luck on the sandscrapes,” Cox said.
“We might get some members out of it, too, which we’re always looking for. We’d like to get as many people from the Bendigo clubs to play in it as possible.
“It brings a few people, makes a bit of money for the golf club and a bit of money for Bendigo.”
The first Sand Greens Championship was played in 1972 and it is rotated between country districts each year.
