“My life changed forever on the night of October 17, 2011. I arrived to pick up my husband and I was shocked to find the front door of the shop unlocked. I went into the shop, calling out to Garry, thinking he must have been down the back and couldn’t hear me.
“What I found when I got to the back room I think will haunt me forever. My husband was lying on the floor. I quickly rang 000, asking for help. The police and the ambulance people arrived. I was crying, I was scared, I couldn’t believe what was happening.
“My world just shattered on that night. I felt helpless, I couldn’t understand. I didn’t know what to do. I remember asking the police to go to my children. I was scared for them at home. I called my brother-in-law and he came to Bendigo to help me. Making phone calls to family and close friends was the hardest thing to do.
The trauma of that night, the visions that I still have, are still with me. I have trouble sleeping, and I haven’t worked since, as my nerves are not good now. My heart feels broken into pieces, just hurts. My husband, the man I loved and shared our lives together, having two beautiful children together, was taken from me in the most horrific way. I will never forget what I saw on that night.
“The newsagency that Garry loved is closed now.
“Garry was a strong and passionate believer in the newsagency industry and would help anyone who needed a hand or advice.
“Garry was generous with his time to assist anyone. He saw good in everyone and was always willing to help others. Garry loved life and enjoyed a good laugh, a beer or two, a social occasion with friends, family gatherings, or meeting with people in the newsagency industry, whatever the occasion. Garry always had a smile for everyone, a laugh that made you laugh too.
“I miss his smiling face and that laugh of his. I loved him and now he is gone. All I have now are memories and his picture in a frame but my heart has him forever.
“I hope and pray that no one else has to go through what we have to and that everyone will be safer in the community after the sentencing is handed down.”
