Police allege John Doyle, 57, shot another man during a dispute on November 29.
Doyle appeared via video link in the Bendigo Magistrates Court yesterday answering two charges of intentionally causing serious injury, and one count each of reckless conduct endangering serious injury, making threats to kill, discharging a weapon to cause injury and unlawful assault with a firearm.
Charge sheets show the offences all relate to the same alleged victim.
Police also caught Doyle driving while his licence was disqualified on December 1 and 4.
At yesterday’s filing hearing, Doyle’s lawyer Clare Wilkin said her client would not be making an application for bail.
Ms Wilkin said it was Doyle’s first time in custody and he would need some attention as he suffered from epilepsy. Doyle sat with his chin cupped in his hands for most of the proceedings.
He quietly answered Magistrate Jennifer Tregent’s questions, but became more animated when he was told of a media application for court documents.
Ms Tregent said she usually allowed media access to charge sheets for accuracy of reporting.
“I don’t believe there’s such thing as accuracy in reporting,” Doyle said.
Ms Tregent smiled at Doyle’s outburst, and agreed that sometimes he could be right, but she said she would allow access anyway.
Ms Tregent also granted a police application for a compulsory procedure.
This involved police getting a DNA sample from the inside of Doyle’s cheek.
Doyle had refused to provide DNA at his initial police interview but later agreed to the order.
