Bendigo gets behind Christmas tree light up

THE Bendigo Advertiser has been overwhelmed by people rallying in support of Friday’s Christmas tree lighting event.

Money, a stage, audio equipment, lighting, entertainment and offers to host the event were received yesterday.

Rob Clohesy of Bendigo Party Hire donated a stage for the event.

“It’s great for the community and all the kids of Bendigo,” he said.

“It’s something that’s pretty important and something we need to go ahead with.”

Dewar Audio Systems owner Suzanne Dewar, who donated a PA system, said she was disappointed the event had been cancelled.

“I remember going to these sort of things as a child ... Bendigo needs this, it shows pure Christmas spirit,” she said.

Mark Coffey of the Wine Bank also offered a PA system.

“I thought it would be shocking not to make something fun out of it,” he said of the event.

“I think people donating services is the sign of a good community.”

Bendigo Youth Choir artistic director Valerie Broad said the group was happy to help and noted the need to celebrate the festive season, and Phoenix FM presenter Anne Conway said she thought she would make a good MC.

“I just thought it was a great shame something like that wouldn’t go ahead,” she said.

Tina Chandler of Hey Dee Ho Music said she’d be happy to sing at the event and donate a large parachute for kids to bounce on.

“They absolutely love having a sing and a dance and it seems like a great event to get behind.”

Julian Fisher of Apex Imagery will record the event and encouraged children to share a video message, and the Marist Brother Brass Band offered to perform.

George Flack, a long time member of the band and director of Flack Advisory, also offered a cash donation between $500 and $1000.

“Community – that sums it up in one word,” he said.

“It’s about the mums and dads and little ones.

“It’s a season for everyone to be joyous and hopefully full of goodwill.”

The final list of performers and logistics of running the event is still being finalised.
