John Jarred, 20, faced the Bendigo Magistrates Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving.
The court heard Jarred had been awake for more than 24 hours when he veered across Strathfieldsaye Road on June 26.
Prosecuting, Leading Senior Constable Dennis Farrell said Jarred had driven his friends to Melbourne on an impromptu trip to Crown Casino the night before.
Leading Senior Constable Farrell said the men stayed at the casino until dawn and all but Jarred, who had only drunk one light beer, decided to stay in Melbourne.
“The accused drove back to Bendigo along the Calder Highway, stopping twice to have a sleep,” he said.
“At about 9am he fell asleep at the wheel and veered across the road, into the path of three cars.
“He side swiped the first vehicle, containing three females, causing the vehicle to spin out of control.
“He collided head on with the second car... then the third car, which contained a mother and two children, slammed into the rear of that vehicle.”
Leading Senior Constable Farrell said Jarred was knocked unconscious in the crash, and had to receive treatment for a broken arm and head injury. None of the other people involved were seriously hurt.Mr Cottrill fined Jarred $15,000 with conviction. Jarred’s licence was also disqualified for six months.
