Strong weather conditions fuelled the fire in Strathallan, which took 12 crews more than an hour to contain.
Echuca Police Acting Sergeant John Atley said the fire was being treated as a “deliberate accident”.
“The cause is unknown but we believe it may be a deliberate accident,” he said.
“We’re not sure how it started.
“There wasn’t any lightning or anything so maybe someone threw something on the ground which ignited the fire.”
Mr Atley said the windy conditions and access difficulties due to irrigation channels made it difficult for the CFA to control.
“It was very windy and it chopped and changed,” he said.
“No houses were threatened and they did a very good job of containing it.”
Smoke from the fire caused the temporary closure of the road by Victoria Police.
