Blow to North Bendigo mum as family car stolen

A pregnant mother of two has been dealt a cruel blow after her stolen car was found damaged and with all her personal items, including medical records, missing.

Kelly Hazell woke up last Tuesday morning to find her Subaru had been taken from the nature strip of her North Bendigo home. It was later found in bushland near Castlemaine, but Ms Hazell has been told she probably won’t get it back.

“My car has been labelled as irreparable and now I am left with no car and little compensation,” she said.

“All my personal belongings had been thrown out: my 50-odd CDs, my prescription sunnies, my medical records that I needed to book a midwife’s appointment.”

The theft has come at a terrible time of year for Ms Hazell, who just lost her grandfather.

She said this recent blow could ruin Christmas for her family.

While not a fancy car, the trusty Subaru was the Haskell family’s only form of transport and now Ms Hazell fears she will be left stranded when she has to return a hire car next week.

“All my family live down in Melbourne so I’m not sure what we’ll do,” she said.

“And I’m eight weeks pregnant so I’ve got my doctor’s appointments and stuff to get to.”

The car was insured but Ms Hazell said her original bargain buy would be hard to repeat.

“I had bought an oldie but a goodie for a bargain price from my mechanic who recommended it, as I seem to have a knack for buying lemons,” she said.

”Now I have to buy a new car on top of all the Christmas presents.

“And finding a bargain car like that again will be impossible.

“Make sure your cars are safe, especially in the lead-up to Christmas. I wouldn’t want this to happen to anyone.”
