Movember theft shatters cafe owners

MORE than $500 of Movember donations was stolen from the Old Green Bean on Thursday night.

Thieves smashed the window of the front door of the Bendigo cafe and stole two jars from the front counter containing donations.

Detective Senior Constable Tony Roberts said police believed the theft happened between 10pm and 5am. Owners Chris and Zoe Waddington said they discovered the theft only after a customer went to put in a donation.

“We are shattered,” Mrs Waddington said. “It is really, really disappointing. Especially because it’s the very last day of Movember as well.”

Mrs Waddington believes the theft must have been planned.

“Usually we don’t have anything valuable around (but) it was pretty obvious there was a bit of money in it.”

The Waddingtons are now going to take donations for Movember for another week in an effort to make up for the stolen money.

“Most customers have been awesome today,” she said.

“If we run it another week hopefully we can make it up.”

Investigations are ongoing and police are waiting on the results of forensic evidence.
