The event will take place in Rosalind Park, beginning at midday, and City of Greater Bendigo mayor Lisa Ruffell and former young citizen of the year Daniel Giles are expected to launch the event.
Bendigo Volunteer Resource Centre manager and event organiser Helen Yorston said the day would involve a range of activities and entertainment for all ages, including an appearance from the Bendigo Braves.
“Some of the disability services, Scope, Interchange and Loddon Mallee, will be in attendance and they will share with the community the sorts of services that are provided to clients,” she said.
Ms Yorston said the day celebrated the achievements of people with a disability and this year’s theme was “removing barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all”.
“It is a great opportunity to come along and find out how people can learn to volunteer and how to work in that area,” she said.
“People with a disability are part of our community and we should learn to appreciate their wonderful achievements and also learn how we can support them.
“As we saw at this year’s London Paralympics, disability does not mean inability, and by publicly celebrating International Day of People with Disability in Bendigo with a community fest, we are making a positive contribution to the lives of approximately one in five Australians with a disability.”
Ms Yorston urged people to get involved by attending the event.
