Leading Senior Constable Darren Scherger said he spotted the man riding on the roof of the car along Goornong’s main street on Sunday.
Leading Senior Constable Scherger said he was leaving the police station to go to a job and the car drove right past the station.
“The car was going in excess of 60km/h,” he said. “A P-plater was driving and it was her boyfriend on the roof with a bottle of water in his hand.”
Leading Senior Constable Scherger said there were two other passengers in the car.
“Their reason was their windscreen wipers weren’t working and the windscreen was dirty and they wanted to wash it,” he said.
Leading Senior Constable Scherger said the Bendigo driver was interviewed and charged with driving in a dangerous manner and careless driving.
Her boyfriend, also from Bendigo, was issued with two $280 fines – one for failing to wear a seatbelt and the other for travelling on a part of a vehicle that is not designed for the carriage of people.
Leading Senior Constable Scherger said he was gobsmacked by the couple’s behaviour.
“I don’t know why she didn’t just pull over,” he said.
“Police will have no tolerance for these types of driving offences.”
