Motorbike rider killed in Golden Square crash

A MOTORBIKE rider in his 40s died after a collision involving a car in Golden Square last night.

Acting Senior Sergeant Della Nihill said the man was travelling on a Harley-Davidson along Mackenzie Street West about 8.10pm.

She said the rider collided with a female driver in a Toyota Echo, throwing the man from the bike and killing him.

The force of the impact threw one of the man’s boots about 30 metres across the road.

The car’s airbags were deployed and the car’s front was extensively damaged.

Acting Senior Sergeant  Nihill said the incident showed the importance of road safety in the lead-up to the holiday period.

“We’ve started our campaign for Christmas and New Year,” she said.

“It’s a busy time on our roads and we’re urge all drivers to adhere to the road rules so they can stay safe over the Christmas and New Year period.”

Acting Senior Sergeant  Nihill said several witnesses had provided police with information.

“We’ve got a number of witnesses giving us varying events,” she said.

“We can’t comment on a cause. We need to speak to all witnesses to ascertain what has occurred.”

She said drivers could expect an increased police presence in coming weeks.

There were reports the man was attending this weekend’s Bendigo National Swap Meet
