Developer Charter Hall will expand the centre by 5200 square metres and hopes to finish the changes by mid-2014.
Charter Hall head of retail asset management John Courtney said it would be a significant boost to retail in Bendigo.
“It will allow us to reconfigure the centre to be more convenient, with better access and parking,” he said. “The customers will find it easier to get in and out and the centre will have a nicer feel.”
“It will be a significant improvement to the current retail offer.
“It’s a full refurbishment of the mall.”
Mr Courtney said designs were being drawn and the work would be undertaken in stages. The project will include the creation of a medical centre, an upgrade of Woolworths and a new Coles built, and the entire mall will be made-over.
Bendigo mayor Lisa Ruffell welcomed the development.
“I think it’s a brilliant thing for Bendigo; it’s 175 jobs we’re going to be creating,” she said.
“It’s a growth centre and we need to be proud of the developments that come to us.
“It will take some people away from places like Hargreaves Mall, the Marketplace and Strath Village, but we can’t stop projects like these.
“We’ve got to embrace them and make areas stand out on their own.”
