Developer Charter Hall said the redevelopment, which was approved by the City of Greater Bendigo last night, would create 175 retail jobs.
Councillors welcomed the expansion, which Rod Campbell said was exciting. “I’m very supportive of this project,” he said.
“It’s a wonderful thing for the people of Bendigo.
“This will serve Kangaroo Flat for some time into the future.”
He said pedestrian walkways and disabled parking bays would be improved, and that the front of the building would be revitalised.
Cr Barry Lyons said the concerns raised by three objectors had been covered, and said most people would be happy with the result.
“This is one of the most major investments at Kangaroo Flat,” he said.
“This will revamp this area and be good for another 10 years, at least.”
Cr Helen Leach tried to pass an amendment to change entry and exit points at the rear of the plaza, which lapsed, and she voted against the development.
Bendigo Business Council executive officer Patrick Falconer said that the development showed Bendigo was moving forward, and it would create job opportunities.
The existing Coles supermarket will be demolished under the plan and a new one built.
Woolworths will expand, and a 700-square-metre medical centre will be created.
More than 200 car-parking spaces and 19 bike spaces will be added and the front facade of the centre will be remodelled.
