Visit to Fortuna brings back memories

Visit to Fortuna brings back memories

16 Dec, 2008 04:00 AM
I WAS one of the many thousands who flocked to see the inside of Fortuna Villa last week, and I am so glad that I did.

It reminded me of childhood memories of traipsing through Ripponlea, Como House, Captain Cook’s Cottage, etc.

All are magnificent houses and a part of our history and heritage.

Is there any good reason why the same could not be done for Fortuna? This could be yet another drawcard for Bendigo, and I am sure people would flock to see such a magnificent yet eccentric house, furnished in the way it was when George Lansell resided there.

Yes of course cost is a factor, but think of how much could have been raised on Saturday alone if everyone who was there had donated a gold coin or two.

I know I would have happily paid just to see behind those gates; surely others would have felt the same.

It would be wonderful to see it restored and open to the public, as the other grand houses in Melbourne are.
