NOW seems like a good opportunity to approach your local federal MP with a submission to acquire, restore and extensively add to Fortuna.
This seems too good a chance to miss for Bendigo’s cultural heritage and tourism status.
I propose not only the acquisition and complete restoration of Fortuna, its gardens and lake, but the demolition of ex-army buildings built after 1942.
This would then allow an ultra-modern regional museum to house Bendigo’s historical collection to be built.
Add to this the possibility of a tramway extension along View Street, left into Barnard/Chum streets and to the entrance at Maple Street, to feed the new attraction with patrons - ensuring the long-term viability of the property as an attraction and regional cultural centre for years to come.
Tram passengers would not only be hitching a ride to another talking tram attraction, but would also have the chance to take in the history and vista of View Street en route.
The famous taped commentary on the trams would bring the journey to life.
Another interesting possible use for the trams could be dinners aboard the cafe tram that takes patrons to Fortuna, followed by a ghostly night tour and refreshments in the restored mansion.
There is an endless list of possibilities for a project like this if you think about it. Maybe this would be a great opportunity for local businesses, the council and Bendigo Trust to jump on board and consider the possibilities for the long term.
