Thoughts on renewable energy are welcome

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
I WOULD like to thank Robert Treller for his letter of February 1 discussing renewable energy generation.

Robert expresses some concerns and questions the promotion of renewable energy for our energy needs.

The simple fact is that renewable energy will play a significant part in powering our future.

Every day the amount of solar energy hitting the earth is greater than 10,000 times the energy being consumed daily.

Physicist Michio Kaku observes that the abundance of infinite renewable energy resources will power our entire world’s energy demand within 100 years.

Already large corporations such as GE and Cisco are making strategic business decisions to research renewable energy technology and components that will facilitate distributed renewable energy generation in a smarter grid network.

They are doing this as they can see enormous growth for their business.

At a local level the Bendigo Sustainability Group has an objective for Bendigo to become 100 per cent powered by renewable energy in the future and it is preparing a plan towards this.

The Central Victorian Solar Cities is also working with many communities interested in establishing their own renewable energy generation capacity.

Why are they interested in this?

Not only because it is good for the environment but they also understand it is good for the economic development and job opportunities within their local community. It retains both financial and intellectual capital within their local area.

This is exactly the same principle that has made the Bendigo Bank Community Enterprise model so successful.

As you can see there is growing momentum both globally and locally to advance renewable energy.

Those who seek to deny or resist the inevitable advancement of renewable energy technology I liken to the little boy with his finger in the dyke trying to hold back the tide.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the many people across Bendigo who recognise the transition to a low-carbon future will lead to a better and smarter future for us all.

KEITH REYNARD,

Strathfieldsaye

Perhaps, "and they all lived happily ever after" would have been a good ending to this fairy tale.

Naming two projects that you are closely involved in, conflict of interest Cr Renyard?

It doesn't matter how much energy hits the Earth if it can't be collected cheaply and reliably.

That Keith is all self-congratulatory because mega-companies are planning to hike our power bills further by building solar plants which generate the most expensive electricity on the planet calls into question his fitness to be a councillor.

He's supposed to be working for us, not spruiking the latest Greens' gimmick.

It's typical of the Greens. Pretend there is a problem where one does not exist and then tell us that only they can save our souls.

The fact is Mirror Madness that in the mid to long term the price of coal and fossil fuels will only ever go one way (up) and renewables the other (down) as efficiency, scale, storage and distribution improve...Coal etc won't match efficiency and gains in clean production that only renewables can achieve. At some point, not so far away, carbon pricing or not, renewables will also be cheaper and not just cleaner, a little vision (and investment) now will save us so much more later.

"...the price of coal and fossil fuels will only ever go one way (up)..."

Rubbish. The "fact is" price of coal in Australia has few upward pressures on it except for the nonsensical carbon dioxide tax and ludicrous so-called 'renewable energy targets'.

Without this artificial corruption of the economy wind and solar wouldn't even be considered as electricity generation technologies.

Time to ignore the silly propaganda of the Greens and get on with building a couple of new coal fired plants for Victoria so we can all enjoy the benefits of cheap reliable electricity.

"Conflict of interest..."

Could you enlighten me about the projects and what the conflict is? I suspect the conflict is no more than one of ideology.

Keith, when you said;

"Robert expresses some concerns and questions the promotion of renewable energy for our energy needs." you were generous.

Robert quoted from a dubious and disputed paper from Verso Economics.

Apart from that I am very supportive of your visionary stance.

Seriously Mirror Madness? 19th century solutions to 21st century problems..?

argue it how you like, the cost of energy will increasingly favour renewables relative to coal/fossil fuels into the future...Costs are going down on renewables not the case with fossil fuels.

so...

Time to ignore the silly propaganda of the...free marketeers/carbon addicts...and get on with building...a responsive, efficient mix of renewable energy...for Victoria so we can all enjoy the benefits of cheap reliable electricity

I've retreated from the mad society seemingly hell bent on having more and more stuff on the never never.

Sure it feeds the economy which must grow, no limits and all that on our precious earth with limited resources.

Infinite growth and finite resources, if that isn't madness then what is?

Wont happen in our time, so lets buy a bit more stuff; to hell with future generations. Neither will we be around to thank them for their 'generosity'. Cheap reliable electricity, now that's a contradiction.

It seems the "fantasy" here is being perpetrated by those who think there's an infinite supply of cheap coal and gas available for our exploitation. At what cost? Both to the environment and the future of productive land in this country. Take the blinkers off and smell the air, dirty power will never be cheap, in the future the retrospective costs of our current lifestyle will be phenomenal.
