Swim club from the 1960s is identified

I would like to give some input into the ‘The way we were’ picture in the Bendigo Advertiser on August 25.

The photograph would have been taken at an official Bendigo swimming club or district event (all the officials are wearing ties) in the summer of 1964 or 65.

The chief judge (in the hat at the top centre of the picture) is my father, Jim Doyle, who died in June 1966.

The starter is most probably Mr Alan Monaghan (former Bendigo shopkeeper) and the referee (in the jacket middle right of picture) would be Mr Jim Reid (father of former MP Bruce Reid).

Some of the swimmers look familiar, but I won’t name them in case I am wrong.

PETER DOYLE,

Balnarring
