 Phantom package could be nasty

Phantom package could be nasty

HAS anyone received an email similar to the following?

Hello!

Unfortunately we were not able to deliver the postal package sent on the 19th of December in time because the recipient’s address is wrong.

Please print out the invoice copy attached and collect the package at our office.

- United Parcel Service of America.

Do not open the attachment!

I checked the source of this email and it is not United Parcel Service of America.

In fact, it’s located in the UK.

Before being tempted to click on the link out of curiosity, ask yourself the following questions:

Do I expect a parcel?

If someone sends me a parcel, then the postal service would have their address to clarify any difficulty with the destination address.

Even so, how do they know that there is a difficulty with the address before even trying to deliver the parcel?

If I am invited to download a link, which supposedly is an invoice copy, needed to collect a parcel at the office of United Parcel Service of America, wouldn’t I expect an address for this office?

But curiosity killed the cat, so if you open the link, you’ll be asked for more personal information than what’s needed just to receive a surprise parcel.

You may end up inviting an unwelcome resident into your computer, soon busy extracting information that may be used to reduce your bank balance.

I received a similar email three weeks ago, blocked the sender, but nowadays the scammers use a computer program to continuously create new email addresses when too many blocks are encountered.

You need not be a victim ever.

Just don’t open email attachments unless you are sure of the sender’s credibility or expect the email.

DAVID KLEIN,

Golden Square
