People need to act for results from council

6/10/2008 10:05:00 AM
ONCE again, I'm amused some people in Bendigo are upset the council is wasting $60,000 on a Christmas tree. Are these the same people who were upset the council wasted $5,000,000 on Hargreaves Mall?

Are these the same people who are upset every time the council announces a yearly rate rise?

Do all these upset people realise that unless the ratepayers - all ratepayers - stop writing letters to the papers, stop wringing their hands and whingeing among themselves; stop being apathetic and start doing something positive by taking on the council - demanding a referendum on big dollar projects and telling the council what they will do with our money - nothing will change.

Council knows the people of Bendigo are too lazy to take any real action against them when they announce their next project - the multi-story car park, the Huntly shopping complex and now the Chinese precinct - studies, plans, talkfests, all costing thousands of our dollars.

All we do is write to the papers.

The people of Bendigo need to be united, to tell this council that we demand a say in how they spend our money - or nothing will change; they will continue to treat the rate-payers with contempt.

Bendigo

I agree David that there are many issues that ratepayers should be more vocal and concerned about. There is a worrying degree of apathy in Bendigo regarding some council decisions. Clearly the lack of comments and feedback to your letter on 6 Oct is indication enough of that apathy. Come on Bendigo ratepayers, you are paying good money for various services etc, if you think it's not fair then you have a right to question decisions made by council that involve the expenditure of your rate money!
