No room for party politics in local govt

18 Mar, 2010 10:11 AM
I WISH to respond to Kaye Maher’s letter in Tuesday’s Advertiser, “Call for councillors to show their colours”, which questioned whether I had any involvement with the National Party.

The answer to Ms Maher’s question is no. I am not now and have never previously been aligned with or a member of any political party.

I am 100 per cent independent and I do not see room for party politics in local government.

Ms Maher states that I have been photographed with the leader of the Nationals in relation to a youth policy the National Party launched in 2006.

The National Party contacted me and asked for my feedback on its policy from the eyes of a 16-year-old learner driver.

On many occasions I have had my photo taken with members of different political parties.

I don’t see how this makes me aligned to any particular party.

I am in my role as a councillor for my community, not myself.

I am passionate about seeing Bendigo grow and develop and helping other young people achieve their dreams. I am not interested in running for other levels of government or joining political parties.

Cr JAMES READE,

Sandhurst Ward, City of Greater Bendigo
