I WOULD like to respond to letters about the new Christmas tree to be installed at the corner of Pall Mall and View Street.
This is a joint initiative of the Bendigo Traders Association, The Advertiser and the City of Greater Bendigo - all contributing to its cost.
The idea for the tree only came about because the pine tree in the Lansell Gardens (a Norfolk Island pine listed on the heritage register) can no longer be decorated because of its poor state.
This tree has been wonderfully decorated for many years by the Lions Club but years of drought conditions have caused the tree to suffer.
In addition, the top 30 per cent of the tree has sustained considerable damage from corella attacks, weakening the upper canopy.
Unfortunately the stress from the birds and the drought now mean that we can no longer risk further damage by decorating the tree for Christmas.
Because of the financial support from the Bendigo Traders Association and The Advertiser the council has been able to buy an alternative tree to dress up the CBD at this very important and festive time of the year.
It should be remembered that the purchase of the tree is a one-off cost for what is expected to become a much valued community asset each year at Christmas time.
It is becoming difficult to decorate the city at Christmas due to new regulations regarding the use of some power poles for this purpose.
We hope that residents will be very proud of the new tree, which will stand an impressive 13.1 metres tall and will be lit using energy-efficient LED lights.
This year Carols by Candlelight will return to Rosalind Park and the new tree will provide a beautiful backdrop to this important annual event.
We all hope the tree signifies Christmas as the season of goodwill and allows people to focus on the many acts of kindness that will take place in our community over the Christmas period.
Cr David Jones Mayor,
City of Greater Bendigo
