I DON’T know how many of your readers are aware that Bendigo is twinned with Penzance and St Just. Both towns are in the far west of Cornwall, England.
The twinning came about in the 1990s but I have recently been co-opted to the committee as a representative of the Older Peoples Forum (a lively group for the over-50s).
I have been approached by several people who would like to make contact with people in your area by email or letter. Young people are already in correspondence through the schools, and it would be nice if older people had the same opportunity.
Miners from here flocked to the Australian goldfields in the 1800s when the tin mines closed - hundreds from St Just alone.
I know many people from Bendigo can trace their ancestry to Cornish miners, hence the original idea of twinning. If any of your readers are interested in making contact with people here, requests can be made through me and I will pass information on. JOYCE LEE,
