Labor has a strong commitment to Bendigo

Labor has a strong commitment to Bendigo

02 Sep, 2010 10:24 PM
The re-election of Steve Gibbons as the federal member for Bendigo shows once again that Bendigo voters respect Labor MPs and Labor governments that believe in Bendigo and get things done in Bendigo.

Likewise, the strong record of the Brumby government in Bendigo will also position our local Labor MPs well for the coming state election.

In the past few years the Brumby government has committed more than $600 million to Bendigo for major infrastructure works.

The government allocated $473 million in this year’s budget to build Bendigo’s new hospital, on top of the $55 million in the previous budget.

It is also investing more than $90 million in building four new junior secondary colleges at Flora Hill, Kangaroo Flat, Eaglehawk and White Hills.

It also injected more than $3 million into major tourism development projects with the Chinese museum precinct and redeveloping the Bendigo tram depot and museum.

As we see from Helen Leach, “Crushing hoons’ cars is Labor copying Libs,” in the Bendigo Advertiser on September 1, the Liberals have so little to offer Bendigo that they are now claiming the credit for Labor policies.

Why, then, do they refuse to fund the new Bendigo hospital?

KAYE MAHER,

Strathdale

Kaye, I think a couple of reality checks are in order. Steve Gibbons was re-elected on his own merits. He does command substantial respect throughout the community from even the other side contrary to what may be stated prior to an election. The Brumby Gov't has Bob and Jacinta advertising "We deliver - Bendigo is getting a new hospital" The budget allocation for this year and next is $23m... less than 5% of the $473m they claim will be allocated right up until 2016. And then there is the issue of whether $473m will cover the cost a debate I'm not commenting on. My point is be wary of politicians of any flavour especially the major parties. You can always tell when they're lying; it's when their lips move, and a billboard backs up their story.

Are you the front person for the Labor Party here now because your letters certainly look that way?

Does the word 'hagiography' ring any bells Kaye? The ALP should put you on its payroll. Oh, wait a minute… By the way Jacinta Allan’s incompetence and meanness has singlehandedly crippled the TAFE sector – new fees and the ludicrous ‘contestability’ concept means the most disadvantaged in our community have had the door to lifelong learning slammed in their faces by an ignorant and uncaring minister for ‘make-work’. Jacinta Allan introduced so called ‘reforms’ which have seen TAFE fees triple for many courses. She also abolished most concession rates and full fees are now being charged for the enrolment of those students who already have a degree or diploma regardless of how out of date their qualifications may be or how desperate their financial and health status is. Enrolment fees for diplomas and advanced diplomas have risen from $877 to $1,500 per year and will increase to $2,500 by 2012 - up by 185%. As night follows day the same rancid reasoning will see costs for apprenticeship courses skyrocket too as this incompetent, cash-strapped government scratches around for more money to fritter away on projects like the cost blown-out desalination plant.

Peter Welch, 2/09/2010 9:51:09 PM Can you be more inventive than creating non-sensical name modifiers? Are clowns defacto non-smart? How good are you at table tennis? Tom Stewart, 3/09/2010 8:37:40 AM Tom, a voice of reason in this mix. Robert Smallpage, 3/09/2010 9:21:47 AM Is that a crime? Peter Wiseman, 3/09/2010 5:55:53 PM "The ALP should put you on its payroll..." Hmm..talk about payroll's. Hagiography? Oh when the Saints come marching in. By that definition you must have many Saints.; Saint Monckton, Saint Plimer, Saint Carter, Saint Watts............ Yes, the word hagiography does ring a bell for me.

So David you have a negative view on anyone else that does not follow your line then?? Thank God I live here in Australia and can have my say too!!!!

By the way David can you show me where I mentioned that it was a crime or is this a bit of mens rae on your part?

"Yes, the word hagiography does ring a bell for me..." Nothing of substance as usual DK – pick on a word, misunderstand its use and fail to address any other point in the post – typical of what passes for debate from your keyboard these days. The list of saints is about right though. Much better than Mr Al 'intimate massage' Gore and his coterie of sycophantic carbon credit fraudsters. I note with great amusement that the Chicago Carbon Credit exchange values all carbon credits between zero and five cents today - down from a high of $30. Great return for investors there… But as I’m committed to lifelong learning, unlike the Labor Party, and Jacinta Allan in particular, here is an explanation of ‘hagiography’ in the secular context of the post above: “Critics of modern biographies who detect uncritically reverential stances on the part of a biographer may damn such work as a "hagiography" by extension.” If it’s still too obscure DK then I’ll re-phrase my post and replace ‘hagiography’ with “uncritical puff-piece” – “a letter of exaggerating praise that ignores opposing viewpoints or evidence to the contrary”. Here endeth the lesson…

PW, 6/09/2010 2:48:52 PM “a letter of exaggerating praise that ignores opposing viewpoints or evidence to the contrary”. Here endeth the lesson…" Yes Master of Exaggeration, I'm humbled by your superiority. Robert Smallpage, 6/09/2010 1:30:48 PM And you are having your say, just like I am. You can always ignore what you don't like. In any case, why ask a question (of Kay Maher), to which you imply to know the answer and which therefore isn't a question but assumption on your part. By the way, Australia isn't the only country where you are free to write comments. No, I have no expectation of anyone to follow 'my line', I am merely voicing my view. It may surprise you that, in the past, I have agreed of some of your views. However. in general, I don't put much credence in "yes you did, no I didn't" political rantings, they usually suffer from a lack of objectivity and oversupply of bias. Objectivity works better from a distance in the calm of reasoning.

" I'm humbled by your superiority..." As is the natural order of things... You can rise now humbled one and return to your keyboard. But don't forget your place in future ;-P
