Laurence Webb in his letter “Ignoring God could have serious consequences” in Friday’s Bendigo Advertiser is entitled to his opinion of what God thinks about those parts of His creation which do not fit the norm. However, he has no right to say that homosexuality is the cause of insecurity, volatility, depression, despair and very high levels of drug and alcohol abuse. What causes those problems is that people who find themselves attracted to the same sex instead of to the other have to hide their true identity for fear of the denigration and rejection typified by Laurence’s letter.Homosexual people who are able to form a permanent loving bond with a partner do not experience the problems Laurence listed any more than the rest of us, and children they raise are no more likely to grow up homosexual or neurotic than average. What children need for good development is the example of two parents who fully love each other, whatever their gender. MICHAEL GROUNDS, Strathfieldsaye
