Well, it certainly is true that you can’t believe everything you read in the paper!
Case in point is David Arscott’s risible fiction of January 28 – “Greens have questions to answer” – in which he made the completely false and slanderous claim that a “Greens activist” had been responsible for the threat to the security of Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott following Mr Abbott’s ill-conceived comments regarding the relevance of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy on Australia Day.
It seems that Mr Arscott’s alleged “Greens activist” is, in fact, well-connected Labor figure and current Unions ACT secretary Kim Sattler.
While it appears that Ms Sattler has indeed championed many worthy causes during her career, she most certainly is not, nor has ever been, a member of the Australian Greens.
Undoubtedly Mr Arscott’s hasty assumptions were prompted by his irrational fear and loathing of the Greens, but it is to be hoped that now the true instigators of Australia Day’s melee – Mr Abbott and his insensitive remarks, and a couple of over-zealous ALP apparatchiks – are apparent to him, a retraction and apology to the Greens and their supporters may be forthcoming.
