Give council candidates chance to share ideas

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
ROBERT Treller’s letter of February 1, ‘‘Think again on backing wind turbines’’, in which he questions Cr Keith Reynard’s promotion and advocacy for wind farms, highlights an important point in this, an election year for council.

It’s all too easy for aspirants for council to be negative, but not to state what they will do.

Voters need to be sure that candidates are not just aware of the problems that this council and community face but that they have ideas and a vision for the future.

Keith Reynard has been a strong voice for 21st century thinking.

He has attracted similar negative comments over the years, but he also received the highest primary vote of any councillor in the last election.

The voters can see through much of the bluster of electioneering, if given the chance.

Whilst there are months to go before the election, could your paper consider creating opportunities for candidates to share with your readers the positive ideas they have for our city?

DAVID JONES,

Sedgwick

This has drawn both our 'greenies" been on and from council right out.

There is nothing positive about a plan to cover our beautiful hillsides with 200 metre high steel towers linked by hundreds of kilometres of dangerous, bushfire-lighting power lines.

Windfarms have no place in Victoria. Leave our hills, mountains and ocean cliffs alone.

Wind farms are the go get behind the idea.

Dead Bird I guess you think it's ok then to have one of Victoria's scenic Valleys covered with a dirty brown haze emitted from polluting coal fired powerplants linked to consumers by thousands of kilometres of bushfire lighting power lines? By the way, more birds die from car strike than are ever likely from Wind Turbines, there are stringent environmental impact regulations in regards to their placement. The view of a clean energy future for our country by far exceeds in time and importance, the view from our windows.

When the jury eventually comes in on the true cost of wind turbines/farms and their effectiveness in generating consistent viable power, I believe all but the most ardent Greenies and devotees of 'alternative energy' will learn and admit that the means and costs did not justify the ends. Eventually, in addition to increased costs on electricity bills, people will become aware of how much of 'their money' has been spent by state and federal governments in subsidising and feeding the 'green is clean' frenzy.

"one of Victoria's scenic Valleys"

Yup, ONE of Victoria's valleys. Not every hillside, mountain and ocean cliff.

We have more than enough deadly fire risk from existing infrastructure.

No sane person would advocate the addition of thousands of kilometres of unnecessary dangerous power lines all over the state.

But that’s what the Greens are calling for with their promotion of environment ruining windmills which are incapable of generating reliable cost effective electricity.
