Doggone it, tins are food for thought

25 May, 2006 10:27 PM
IN response to Terry Mills' letter "Method behind new shape dog food tins", The

Advertiser, Tuesday, May 23.

Doggone - it's new cans is it?

Without actually having to dig back many years to revive my secondary school calculus, some thoughts come to mind about the reported new size of dog food cans and the claimed environmental benefit of the more squat tin.

I think indeed there is the small benefit of some two per cent in the surface area of the

tin (the bigger top and bottom almost balancing the "saving" in the sides). But life may not be as simple as this.

Might there not be some extra work and energy in the manufacture - the "crimping"

of the 16 per cent longer lengths of the circumferences of both the top and bottom of

the advanced new tin?

Well, food for thought - life ain't simple.

TERRY DAVIDSON, Strathfieldsaye
