THE recent incident in Kangaroo Flat in which a man allegedly tore off the head of a kitten in front of children underscores what I have said and believed for some time now; we are a society in decay.
This hideous display is not just about cruelty to cats or even other animals.
It is merely a symptom of a greater malaise that is afflicting our society in general.
When human life itself is held by many to have no value, animals are not even going to rate on the scale.
For every decent human being walking the streets today there are 10 who would sell their grandmother for a hundred dollars.
For every charitable act there are 10 knives in the dark, 10 kicks to the face, 10 deceptions.
No one is truly, and I mean truly, held accountable for their actions.
Well meaning apologists will continue to explain away each new despicable act with token theories and excuses that avoid mentioning the pure, simple rottenness in some peoples hearts.
We have become immune to violence, anti-social behaviour and just plain rudeness.
We don’t like it but we accept it like a patient taking their medicine.
We are awash with hoon drivers, murderers, drug addicts, sex offenders, assailants and con artists.
Of course I will be seen as some kind of negative thinking depressive, but even a man blind from birth could see that our great democratic society is in spiraling decay.
Even the healthiest of bodies can always be destroyed by just one cancer, and our cancer is our “no care, no responsibilty taken” 21st century lifestyle.
I truly wish I were wrong.
