 Costing confidentiality must be questioned

Costing confidentiality must be questioned

31 Aug, 2010 11:04 PM
ROBERT Smallpage raises a very valid issue with his letter in the Bendigo Advertiser, on August 31.

The issues involving democracy and the democratic processess of the council are a concern.

The chief executive's claim that the final costing of our mall will be treated as commercially confidential makes a mockery of transparency, performance management, democratic accountability and community engagement from our third tier of government.

Finally, how can elected members of the council carry out their monitoring, scrutiny role on behalf of their constituents – the public, taxpayers and service users – if commercial in confidence is used to prevent that governance and scrutiny?

Or, do our councillors care about their role in a democratic society?

BILL COLLIER,

Golden Square

Well said Bill. It is sad when it seems only one elected councillor Peter Cox is alive to whats going on.

Bill Collier very well said, but how can the councillors make a demorcratic decision when the decision has already been made by the C.E.O. or one of the directors and the work started. The councillors let this happen time and time again without pulling the C.E.O. and directors into line. Therefore they don't give a dam about what is really happening.

How much longer do we have to suffer this council, the secrecy, bad management and influenced decision making?
