 Continued superpipe opposition is wrong

Continued superpipe opposition is wrong

4/06/2008 8:31:00 AM
ERIL Rathjen (The Advertiser, May 26) continues to support the Liberal campaign of Sharman Stone against Labor’s superpipe, despite it being essential to our great city.

Ms Rathjen and Ms Stone are happy for water to be traded from the Goulburn Valley to Adelaide for its plush gardens.

However, they refuse to support transferring water to parched Bendigo.

Just when will the Rathjen-Liberal coalition realise that drought and climate change mean that the Bendigo needs the superpipe?

Your readers may be assured that I totally oppose their anti-Bendigo policy.

BOB CAMERON MP,

State Member for Bendigo West

Such ignorance from our elected representatives is deplorable. Adelaide has every right to expect that water will flow to them - that's a lot different from building an huge pipe to take water from its natural place.

To describe Ms Rathjen's stance as "anti-Bendigo" continues Labor's policy of dumbing-down the debate. Call us liars, call us anti-anything... but don't engage us on a reasoned discussion because the indefensibility of your position will become apparent in an instant.

It would be great to hear politicians tell the truth and not spin. Eril Rathjen and Ms. Stone are advocates of common sense about water and they certainly do not try to divide and conquer like Bob Cameron is doing with this statement.

It's disappointing when a politician like Bob Cameron sees this as a party political issue, when it is, and should be argued on the triple bottom line: Is it economically sound, environmentally responsible and socially useful? This proposed N-S Pipeline just doesn't fit the bill in all three categories, especially for Mr Cameron's constituents.
