Changing Australia Day would give in to bullying

01 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
Changing the date of Australia Day, as The Age journalist Martin Ferguson proposes, would be like giving into bullying or even to terrorism and seen as weakness and cowardice throughout the world.

It would be better to look at some of the central problems concerning the January 26 riot (which, an ALP staffer incited and had intended for the opposition leader, albeit in a lesser form, to give the opposition leader a bit of curry to embarrass him in the media); and that is, that without work and income people don’t have purpose and a sense of place in a nation’s community; that people need to be trained to get work and income and they must live within the nation’s community as part of it, and not be excluded.

An inclusive Australia with work and income for all Australians.

JOHN DOBINSON.

Great work there John. As a country, we cannot afford to give in to the vocal minority. January 26 is a day to celebrate what makes this country great ! Warm weather, the hottest 100, BBQ with mates and even sinking a few. A day for us to band together and say WE ARE AUSTRALIAN AND BLOODY PROUD OF IT ! It is time for people to let go of the hurt of the past, as those people who were hurt in these alleged wrong doings are now long gone. Time to look to the future.

I'm with you John! We should be grateful that the 19th of February is not our National Day. That's the day 70 years ago this year that Japan bombed Darwin. If the Japanese invasion had been successful, there would be no need to worry about protests, land rights or burning and spitting on the Australian flag!
