Call for councillors to show their colours

Call for councillors to show their colours

16 Mar, 2010 09:44 AM
ELIZABETH Morley (The Advertiser “Pokies comment displayed ignorance’’, March 11) said three members of the City of Greater Bendigo council are past Liberal candidates in Bendigo.

Are there members of the Nationals on the council? Are there closet supporters of the Nationals on the council?

James Reade appeared in a picture with Nationals leader Peter Ryan in the lead-up to the state election in 2006.

The picture was in The Advertiser on October 13, 2006.

It showed James Reade holding an L-plate in a car alongside Mr Ryan, and accompanied a report of the launch of the Nationals’ youth policy.

James Reade also appeared in a similar picture in a party political pamphlet distributed by the Nationals before the election.

One imagines that if he agreed to this, he was happy to be associated with the Nationals in their party political publicity.

KAYE MAHER,

Strathdale

It's not illegal for candidates to have past or present political allegiances is it? Morally though I may well prefer my candidates to disclose any current political or commercial affiliations. Just because you've previously nailed your colours to the mast shouldn't preclude you from being eligible for public office in any level of government.
