MAY I thank the Bendigo District RSL for the dignified ceremony marking the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II – VP Day.
More than 44,000 young Australians paid the supreme sacrifice in defending the values of democracy and lives were lost on our soil for the first, and thankfully, only time.
Representatives of local veterans’ organisations, who continue to support and assist the ex-service community, attended in good number to lay wreaths and remember the fallen.
This is one of several commemorative services presented by the local RSL each year.
It provides us with appropriate opportunities to recall brave men and women who have served Australia in times of conflict and peace and recommit to the values of our democracy.
CRAIG HUNTER,
Bendigo
