I AM a student at Weeroona College, Bendigo, and I strongly disagree with the decision that has been made by a review panel to take out the study of French language from public schools in Bendigo only.
I have been learning French for 11 years and I have really enjoyed studying the language.
I am very disappointed about this matter, because I have found French a very rewarding language to learn.
The culture and the sound of the language is beautiful, not to mention that it is spoken by millions of people in 42 countries.
Why Bendigo? I don’t see the point of taking the opportunity away from future French students in Bendigo only.
And what is going to happen to the French teachers?
Especially the younger French teachers who have just started teaching the language and who have spent years and a lot of money at university studying the language.
They are now told they will either have to give up teaching French or get a new job at one of the private schools in Bendigo, which already have enough French teachers.
The review panel is planning to replace French with German and Chinese. How many German and Chinese teachers are there?
It’s going to be hard to find the number needed for each of the schools.
Even though I am lucky enough to be able to complete my studies of French until year 12, I am very disappointed that future students will be denied the opportunity to learn and enjoy the learning of this wonderful language.
