Acquisition of Fortuna needs public support

09 Apr, 2009 05:00 AM
THE City of Greater Bendigo Council must soon consider whether to acquire the Fortuna property for community use, or decline the chance and let it go to potential private sale.

This property is of immense significance to Bendigo, its history, and Victoria, and this opportunity will come but this once.

The Villa Fortuna Action Group was formed some time ago, and will present to the council a strong case for maintaining Fortuna in public hands, with cogent arguments for its successful use by various community groups.

So far, it seems the group is the only one in the city with any form of proposal for the acquisition by the council.

It is now time for the “movers and shakers” of this city to support the proposal for public acquisition as, without strong public support, the opportunity could easily be lost, as, some may remember, the Capital Theatre was nearly lost.
