IF you’ve ever lived in a country town then you will know the importance a football netball club has on the community. It’s often the heart and soul of the community, not only promoting sporting excellence but a great social environment for family and friends. It’s also a huge money-raising initiative in small towns. That’s why tomorrow marks an important milestone for the Newbridge Football Netball Club.Almost nine months ago the club was one of the worst hit when raging floodwater wiped out its facilities, leaving it unable to play at its home ground during this year’s Loddon Valley Football Netball League season. The club’s change rooms were destroyed, its canteen and bar area demolished and the ground’s fences, goal posts and scoreboard uprooted when the Loddon River burst its banks in January. The damage put the club’s 2011 season in doubt and left a clean-up bill in the hundreds of thousands. But with much help and support from the community, rival LVFL clubs, media and other organisations, the club has raised $300,000 and secured crucial government funding to rebuild its facilities. The club will tomorrow begin that rebuilding process by demolishing its damaged facilities. If all goes to plan the new clubrooms will be open in April next year, just in time for the 2012 football season. It’s a momentous day for the club and the Newbridge community, but also every individual, family, business and organisation who helped along the way.
