FOUL snooker – Melbourne has hijacked Bendigo’s world-class event.Having been at a conference in Ballarat for two days, it was exciting to watch the world’s best snooker players doing battle in Bendigo on Fox Sports.Fox has done a brilliant job with the little packages in the coverage of players visiting Bendigo tourism sites such as Victoria Hill and the town hall and that’s the coverage we were hoping for with this event broadcast across the world. But it seems when it comes to the competition arena, Melbourne has crashed our party. In fact, anyone tuning into this event would be convinced by the huge blue signs that dominate the arena that it’s being played in Melbourne. It was sad to hear people in the hotel on Monday night ridiculing Bendigo for allowing Melbourne to take over.Unfortunately, the Fox Sports hosts are even seated in a way that they block out the Bendigo logo on the sign behind them. The state government has taken its opportunity to promote Melbourne. That’s fine, it has put a lot of time and money into getting this event to Australia and that gives it promotion rights. But there’s no need to hog the show. After all, the state government made a big deal at the event launch of saying how much it would promote this city. This is not about being ungrateful. Bendigo is honoured to have world- class sport in our city and once again is proving a worthy host.Under the rules of snooker, a foul snooker permits a free shot. Well, our free shot is that the state government should see the error of its ways and at least replace every second Melbourne sign with our accepted Bendigo logo. That way everyone wins and gets their fair share of this brilliant TV coverage by Fox Sports.– ROD CASE, editor
