Loong's last hurrah does Bendigo proud

30 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
THE world’s oldest imperial dragon was farwelled by more than 5000 people at the weekend.

The streets of Bendigo came alive as Loong, the 120-year-old dragon, ended his parading career. Motorists scrambled for parking spaces as families made their way to Bendigo’s Chinese precinct ahead of Loong’s last appearance.

Amid a throng of people on their way to the event, I overheard a young boy ask his father if they were going to make it in time to see the dragon. “I don’t want to miss him, Dad,” he said.

It was stinking hot but, like the young boy, everyone wanted to see Loong. Thousands ditched the comfort of their airconditioned homes to catch a glimpse of his last hurrah. And he didn’t disappoint.

Carried by more than 20 people, Loong made his way along Dai Gum San and the neighbouring roads amid cheers from the crowd.

Golden Dragon Museum general manager Anita Jack confirmed the event was “biggest Chinese celebration” Bendigo has seen.

“The museum during the day was full of people from Bendigo,” she said.

“We also had visitors from New South Wales and South Australia who had heard about the event.”

With performances from twirlers, stilt walkers dressed in traditional Chinese attire, a selection of mouth-watering foods, dance and music, I doubt anyone was disappointed.

“We wanted our kids to see the dragon,” a family told me as edged closer to the shady tree they were sitting under. It’s important that they learn about different cultures.”

So well done Loong, you brought people from all walks of life and a host of different cultures together at the weekend. You’ve done Bendigo proud.
